Dream on cyclist

“Dream on cyclist” nace en una visita a la ciudad de Berlín; cuando, recorriendo sus calles, comienzo a observar entre la marea de bicis y ciclistas que transitan por la ciudad pequeños objetos, casi diría que parecen juguetes, con los que algunos ciclistas decoraban sus manillares, dando a sus bicicletas cierto aire risueño, alegre, casi transformándolas en un dibujo animado. Con sólo ese detalle lograban arrancarme una sonrisa, sincera, y hacían preguntarme quienes eran esas personas que transmitían con ese pequeño símbolo esa imagen de optimismo y vitalidad en medio de una urbe que, a pesar de incentivar políticas como un transporte más ecológico y sostenible, no dejaba de ser una capital europea que reproduce muchos de los males que aquejan a las grandes ciudades actuales.

Nunca llegue a conocer a ninguna de esas personas; sin embargo, seguía interrogándome sobre los vitalistas y orgullosos propietarios de esas bicicletas animadas. Decidí pues, que lo único que podía hacer era tratar de adivinarlo y usar mi imaginación para ello. Pero no quería que la serie de fotografías que había creado fuera un documento sin más, que simplemente documentara una “excentricidad”.

Quería dar una voz a los personajes que había creado en mi mente y que el conjunto de todo ello supusiera un pequeño homenaje a una forma más optimista y vitalista de ver la vida, a pesar de cualesquiera que sean los infortunios, peleas vitales o situaciones difíciles a los que tod@s tenemos que enfrentarnos en nuestro día a día.

De tal forma, que a cada fotografía le acompaña un pequeño extracto de una gran obra literaria que me da pie a posteriori a tratar de trazar un breve retazo de la posible historia personal de cada uno de los portadores de esa bicicleta tan especial que nos hace a tod@s soñar, aunque sólo sea por un breve instante, cuando recorremos la ciudad.

The project of “Dream on cyclist” was born during a stay in Berlin, when roaming, I started to notice, among the sea of bikes and cyclists riding through the city, small objects, like toys, with which some cyclists had decorated their handlebars giving their bikes a smiling, cheerful character, almost turning them into a cartoon. Just with that small detail they made me smile and wonder about who where those people that conveyed such an image of optimism and vitality in the midst of a city that, despite its policies to encourage a more ecological and sustainable transport, it is still a European capital that reproduces many of the problems that afflict the big cities today.

I never get to know any of these people; however, I still questioned myself about the lively and proud owners of these cartoons like bikes. I took the decision then to use my imagination to guess who they were. But I did not want my photographs to be jus t mere document’s, just records of an “eccentricity”

I wanted to give a voice to the characters I had started to create in my mind and to make it in a way it would be a small tribute to a more optimistic and lively view of life, despite whatever misfortunes, troubles or difficult situations we all have to face in our everyday life.

Thus, each photograph is accompanied by a small excerpt from a literary work, which allows me later to write a text in which I try to imagine an episode of the personal history of each of the owners of such an special bike that makes us dream, if only for a brief moment, when we walk through the city.
